About Us
Founded in July 2002, KIPP Austin Public Schools is a network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools that empowers a new generation to transform their futures and make a difference in their world.
In East Austin, the path to college has traditionally been impeded by a lack of educational opportunity. KIPP Austin College Prep, open since 2002, is a middle school that serves grades five through eight; KIPP Austin Collegiate is a high school that currently serves ninth grade, and will expand a grade each year to serve grades nine through twelve by 2011. In 2009, we opened our second middle school, KIPP Austin Academy of Arts & Letters. It now serves only fifth graders, but will encompass grades five through eight by 2012. All three schools provide academically rigorous programs where students successfully climb the mountain to college.
In 2010 we will open our first elementary school starting with Kindergarten, lead by current Fisher Fellow Justin Scott.
The success of KIPP students has been heralded by media nationwide, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Newsweek, 60 Minutes, ABC World News, and many more. Our program has been praised in the Wall Street Journal editorial pages, and Oprah Winfrey has called KIPP a "revolutionary new school system."
