Candidate Application and Selection FAQs

How do I apply?

All individuals wishing to be considered for a position at KIPP Austin Public Schools must first complete our online application. In order to complete an application, please visit our Careers page and do the following:

  1. Review the qualifications for available positions and apply to the role that best suits your background and skillset.
  2. Check the box next to the position(s) you wish you wish to apply, and then click “Apply to Selected Jobs.”
  3. From here, you will be prompted to create a profile and complete the online application which includes an application form with essay questions and a submission of you resume and a detailed cover letter.

Please note that applications are only accepted online; do not email, fax, or mail a copy of your resume. Should you have any problems with our online system, please contact No phone calls please.

What does KIPP Austin’s selection process look like?

KIPP Austin's application process is designed to help us learn as much information as possible about you as a candidate, while allowing you to gain insight into our organization's values and approach. To that end, we customize our process depending on factors that include, but are not limited to, previous professional experience, position to which you have applied, your geographic location, timeframe of application, and/or principal discretion. For most teaching candidates, this process involves the following:

Stage 1:  Initial screen (phone or in-person) and/or an additional essay
Stage 2:  Formal interview
Stage 3:  Sample lesson process (video and/or in person) 

Other steps in the process may include written interview exercises, reference checks, and/or participation in a talent event, among other activities. The final stages of the selection process typically include a visit to the KIPP Austin campus to which you are applying.

Please know that KIPP Austin is very fortunate to receive a large number of applications. We highly encourage you to complete your application with a high level of thoughtfulness, detail, and excellence. Due to the high volume and our internal policy, we do not provide feedback for candidates who do not move beyond the screening stages of the application process.

What are the benefits of applying by the specified deadlines?

We are very fortunate to receive a large number of qualified applicants.  Hence, the earlier you apply, the better your chances are to be considered for one of our positions. Furthermore, when you apply by a specific deadline, we will notify you within a short timeframe (4-6 weeks, depending on a variety of factors* including the position you have applied for, your geographic location, the timeline of your application, and principal discretion). We highly encourage applicants to submit an application by the Priority Deadline, February 3rd, 2013.

*Please note that there are instances when selection processes will fall out of the 4-6 week timeframe. KIPP Austin will communicate transparently with candidates whose timeline may extend beyond 6 weeks.

Can I apply prior to the Early Bird Deadline?

Absolutely! We encourage interested applicants to submit an application immediately. Members of the recruitment team are reviewing applications on a rolling basis and will follow up with possible next steps.

Can I apply for more than one position?

For teaching positions, we highly encourage you to only apply to one position with us. When we review your application and begin the selection process, we will determine if you are a better match for a different subject area or grade level. Should you choose to apply to more than one school, please know that you may be expected to go through a separate process for each school.

Should you not be a fit for the position you applied for, but you are a strong fit for another role in one of our schools, never fear, our schools and recruitment team will work hard to find a place for you! We are looking for the nation’s best candidates and we’ll work hard to find a match.

What if I am not selected to move forward?

If you are not selected to move forward, we encourage you to continue to gain more experience, hone relevant skills, and reapply the following year. KIPP Austin is in the process of growing to ten schools within the next 5 years, and we will continue to need excellent teachers as our school and staff continues to expand.

Can I apply to a specific school?

If you are interested in a specific school, please make your preference known to a member of the recruitment team (this information can be noted in your cover letter and/or our online application) and we will take your request into consideration as you move through the selection process.

What are the competencies of a KIPP Austin staff member?

We seek individuals who demonstrate our core values of courage, tenacity, quality, honor, and community. Successful team members are highly reflective, constantly seeking to improve their practice, and value feedback. Qualified applicants have demonstrated results working with historically underachieving students. A achelor’s degree is required for all teaching, academic, and school-based positions. How do I become certified in Texas?

In general, there are five basic requirements for someone new to the field of education to become a certified teacher. These requirements are not necessarily completed in sequence and it is recommended that you discuss your plans to become a teacher with an Educator Preparation Program early in the process.
